CUBA & THE COLD WAR

May 11 - May 18 2019

Visit the last vestige of the Cold War, the island of Cuba, to learn about one of history’s most exciting and tense conflicts. The sultry city of Havana, the city where the Cold War almost became “hot,” features numerous prominent sites that honor this nail-biting conflict between the United States, the Soviet Union, and Cuba.

We will visit sites such as Revolution Square, the Bay of Pigs, the government’s underground tunnels at the Hotel Nacional, and the outdoor aircraft and missile museum near the five century old awe-inspiring fortress of Havana, containing the wreckage of American reconnaissance planes as well as Soviet nuclear missiles previously hidden on the island. This course will focus on the Bay of Pigs invasion as well as the Cuban Missile Crisis and their implications on the present day lives of ordinary Cubans.
